Economy & Wealth

The Great Lakes wasteland runs on a mix of barter, bottlecaps, and Brotherhood-backed currency. To maintain fairness and immersion, all wealth and resources must adhere to the guidelines below.

1. Currencies of the Great Lakes

There are three recognized forms of currency in the region:

  1. Bottlecaps

    • The classic currency of the Fallout world.

    • Universally accepted by merchants, travelers, and most settlements.

    • Commonly used for day-to-day purchases (food, ammo, drinks, minor services).

  2. Brotherhood Scrip

    • Printed currency backed by the Brotherhood of Steel Gold Reserve in New Chicago and recognized in Brotherhood-controlled settlements across the Midwest.

    • Treated as more “stable” than caps in major towns under BOS influence.

    • Useful for large-scale trades (weapons, vehicles, properties, bulk supplies).

  3. Trade Goods

    • Represents barter value for goods, services, and favors when neither caps nor scrip are used.

    • Common examples: ammo, fuel, meds, crops, spare parts, scrap metal, or luxuries.

2. Starting Wealth

  • All players begin with a small stipend of currency (in caps, scrip, or goods) to establish themselves in the world.

  • Players who wish to start with greater wealth, income, or assets must submit a Wealth Application via the community website.

  • Applications are reviewed to ensure balance and lore consistency. Approval is not guaranteed.

3. Earning Wealth In-Game

  • Roleplay First – Wealth and resources are earned through character development, business, and faction storylines.

  • Factions & Businesses – Groups may generate income but must grow through RP (trading, raiding, scavenging, or organized commerce).

  • Events & Quests – Admin or player-led events may reward caps, scrip, or valuable goods.

4. Technology & Rare Items

  • Standard Gear (basic firearms, melee weapons, light armor, survival tools) is available to most characters.

  • Advanced Technology (energy weapons, power armor, vertibirds, robotics) is restricted at the start. These must be earned through significant roleplay, trades, or admin events.

  • Repair & Maintenance – Owning advanced tech comes with upkeep. Characters must roleplay the costs, repairs, or Brotherhood restrictions associated with such gear.

  • Wealth ≠ Instant Power – Even wealthy characters cannot begin with stockpiles of rare tech or armies of NPCs. Growth and prestige must be earned in the roleplay environment.

5. Fair Play & Balance

  • The economy system exists to support story-driven play, not to give players unfair advantages.

  • Staff reserve the right to review and adjust character wealth, assets, or technology if they break lore or unbalance the server.

  • Collaboration and creativity are encouraged — trade, haggle, barter, and build your own mark on the Great Lakes economy.
